The audition material available below will be supplied at the audition. There is no need to bring music/audio device as one will be afforded at the time of audition.
Tryouts are for initial chair placement within the "Maury High School Jazz Band."
Students unavailable to attend the first class period the tryout must contact Ms. Daye prior to the start of the school year.
The pieces listed below will be the same pieces to be played at the tryout. Make sure you practice to correct version of Blue Bossa: (Trombone players may choose to play the song an octave lower.)
Joekiller/Hard workin JB Groove are for aspiring percussionists and both will be played. There is no need for percussionists to play Blue Bossa.
Pianists/guitarists will be asked to "comp chords" for "Blues in the Key of F Concert." Basically what that means is play the chords along with the recording. Use the Concert F Blues Chord Sheet provided.
Bass Players will be asked to "walk a line" (play a quarter note jazz bass line) on "Blues in the key of F Concert." Use the
Concert F Blues sheet provided.
"Horn Players" (clarinet, saxophone ,trumpet, trombone) and Rhythm players(guitar, piano, bass) may choose to improvise a solo on "Blues in the Key of F Concert" but it is not mandatory. However, strong soloists have a better chance at earning a higher chair position.
Vocalists can bring in a prepared piece of no more than 2 minutes on any mobile device that has a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack. The recording must not have any singing on it for the vocalist to sing along to. If a vocalist chooses, they can simply sing "a capella" or demonstrate their ability by "scat" singing over the "Blues in the key of F Concert" recording.
